We hope this email finds you well. Winter in Metung this year has been a combination of bright crisp clear days, welcome drenching rains, and a cool southerly wind that blows in every few days! While Melbourne has had quite cold weather this year, Metung tends to be milder due to the moderating effect of the Lakes.
Once in a Lifetime Boating Mishap
One of the most extraordinary boating accidents happened on the opposite side of Bancroft Bay from McMillans in early June. Travelling at night, and missing the warning lights, the driver of a 7m motor boat hit a set of wooden pylons on the point of the Bay. Given the particular angle that the boat hit these pylons, rather than tearing a hole in the bow the boat literally slid up onto these obstacles where is stayed, perfectly balanced.
When dawn came, people were incredulous to see this large boat sitting up out of the water, cradled by the pylons as if in dry dock. Amazingly there were no serious injuries. It was a week before a water-borne crane could lift it off the pylons allowing plenty of time for everyone to get a closer look.
Our Griffith Bridal Fair Winners
With the regular flow of guests we receive from country NSW, McMillans of Metung provided the major prize for the Griffith Bridal Fair, a wonderful local event now in its 20th year. The winner of the competition was Griffith couple Heidi Watt and Brian Stacey who are set to be married on September 11. We look forward to seeing Heidi and Brian very soon!
Australian Fishing Championships in Metung
For those serious about their fishing, Metung will be a mecca for the country's best bream fishermen in mid-November when the 2010 Australian Bream Fishing Championships are held in Metung. This is the first time the championships will be held outside of Queensland: A testament to the high regard the fishing community has for the Gippsland Lakes area. 150 professional anglers will make up 70 teams who will compete for bream glory. And just for the record, yes, this is a catch and release tournament - for those coming to Metung this Christmas, your dream of catching a lovely big bream off McMillans private marina is still alive!
McMillans in Mexico
As mentioned in the last Sprig, a McMillans baseball cap was sighted on the Gold Coast, but it may be a while before this new record is broken. Regular McMillans guest Steve Casey was wearing the McMillans cap while competing for Australia in the ITF Senior World Tennis Championships in Mexico City. Steve was in the men's 45 and over team, with Australia finishing 11th of 18 countries. In the World Individual Championship, he reached the quarterfinals of the singles and the final of the doubles - winning a silver medal! Well done Steve - we expect the visitor numbers from Mexico to surge any day now...
